Portland football team chasing history and another Gold Ball
After 22 years in the wilderness, Portland's football team captured an elusive Class A state title last autumn. The Bulldogs have some new faces in new places this year, but they're hoping to celebrate once again. Contributed photos.

Portland High School has as storied a football tradition as anyone.

And with that in mind, it comes as a shock to learn that the Bulldogs have never gone back-to-back as state champions.

The 2025 squad is bound and determined to change that.

And while there are some new faces in new places, including at head coach, Portland still has the pieces in place to entertain greatness and capture excellence.

"I'm excited," said senior standout Cordell Jones, the state's reigning Gatorade Player of the Year, who will play at the University of Maine next year. "I can't wait. It's a special group. I think the team's looking really good. We have a lot of talent all over the place. We just have to build depth."
