Sanford girls race to huge lead, eliminate Thornton Academy

PORTLAND—Three of the four higher ranked teams struggled out of the gate in Tuesday's Class A South girls' basketball quarterfinals at the Portland Exposition Building.
The Sanford Spartans were the exception.
And did just the opposite.
Second-ranked Sanford came out sizzling against No. 7 Thornton Academy, built an insurmountable lead by the end of the first period and went on to an impressive victory.
In the process, hinting that even bigger things are still to come.
