South Portland girls hold off Sanford's rally, advance to regional final

PORTLAND—Last round, South Portland started slowly while Sanford came roaring out of the gate.

Thursday afternoon, in a Class A South girls' basketball semifinal at the Portland Exposition Building, the roles reversed.

And as a result, the third-ranked, defending state champion Red Riots had just enough to hold off the second-seeded Spartans and keep their quest alive for another Gold Ball.
