Freeport girls pull away late to down Waynflete, stay perfect

FREEPORT—Freeport's girls' lacrosse team expected to roll to another decisive victory Wednesday afternoon at the Joan Benoit Samuelson Track and Field.

That's because the Falcons almost always win with ease this fall and when the undermanned Waynflete Flyers showed up with their best player, senior Lydia Birknes, in street clothes, there was ample reason for Freeport to be overconfident.

But for much of the game, the Flyers, the reigning Class C state champions, played valiantly and went toe-to-toe with the Falcons.
