Newsletter #6...Welcome aboard, cPort Credit Union!

Hoffer's High School Sports is very pleased to announce that cPort Credit Union has come on board as our official, exclusive partner.

This site and cPort Credit Union have a similar vision, as cPort Credit Union "prides ourselves on fostering community connections and supporting initiatives that resonate with our values," while Hoffer's High School sports is committed to being the go-to location for high school sports coverage.

The partnership between Hoffer's High School sports and cPort Credit Union will allow this site to continue to grow and we kicked off our collaboration by sprucing up the site.

In addition to the site's core game coverage, look for some exciting new joint ventures in the weeks to come, including a podcast and weekly honors for local athletes.

"At cPort, we understand the importance of community and high school sports reflect the heart and spirit of southern Maine. Teaming up with Hoffer’s High School Sports is an opportunity to celebrate excellence, build connections and inspire future generations. Together, we are championing the incredible stories that foster pride, learning and resilience in our young athletes," said Bill Whitmore, cPort Credit Union's Executive Vice President of IT and Business Solutions.

In case you find that name familiar, there's good reason...

Bill Whitmore, right, cPort Credit Union's Executive VP of IT and Business Solutions, is also the girls' basketball assistant coach at Cheverus, winners of two of the past four Class AA state titles. Courtesy Billy Goodman.

Whitmore is an assistant girls' basketball coach at Cheverus and is the longtime right-hand man of Billy Goodman (as well as his calming force) and he has played a key role in winning five Gold Balls with Goodman at McAuley and Cheverus.

While most sites have frequent text interruptions with ads, that won't be the case here.

While cPort Credit Union will be consistently branded on the site, our unique game story look will remain the same.

I'm honored that cPort Credit Union has chosen to make this investment and I hope you consider them for your financial needs.

Polls

Here's this week's Super6 polls, which includes teams in our coverage area, from Thornton Academy to Freeport, through games played Thursday, May 29th:

Baseball

/0:08

1 Scarborough
2 Thornton Academy
3 Gorham
4 Falmouth
5 Greely
6 Cape Elizabeth

The Red Storm aren't merely getting unhittable pitching, they're scoring a lot of runs too and so far, have passed every test. You could argue teams 2-6 could be in any order, but recency basis reigns supreme and the Golden Trojans' comeback from seven runs down Tuesday to stun the Rams was breathtaking. A quick warning to Class A South teams: Beware the Navigators.

Softball
1 Cheverus
2 Windham
3 Gorham
4 NYA
5 Freeport
6 Yarmouth

The Stags look more and more dominant by the game, but the Eagles and Rams are hoping to knock them off when it matters most. The Clippers could be a very dangerous out in Class B South.

Boys' lacrosse

1 Falmouth
2 Yarmouth
3 Thornton Academy
4 South Portland
5 Freeport
6 NYA

The Navigators took care of business against the Clippers and are now playing as much against history as any Maine foe. Yarmouth, meanwhile, will find out if it's still atop the Class B pecking order when it faces York Friday.

Girls' lacrosse
1 Windham
2 Freeport
3 Cheverus
4 Thornton Academy
5 Gorham
6 Yarmouth

The Eagles' closing stretch will reveal just how title-worthy they might be. The Falcons are closing in on a perfect regular season, but they know it's what happens next month that matters most.

A look ahead

The Yarmouth and York boys' lacrosse teams produced an epic Class B state game a year ago, a contest which saw the Clippers rally to tie it up late, then win it in overtime, 13-12, on Colter Olson's goal. Yarmouth handled the Wildcats in the teams' first regular season meeting, 7-1, but this afternoon, the rivals meet on the grass in York, where the Wildcats look to close the gap. That's not all, as the Freeport girls precede Yarmouth to York, playing the Wildcats at 2:15. I'll have coverage of both contests. Also in girls' lacrosse, red-hot Windham plays at resurgent Falmouth in a game rife with Heal Points implications.

Saturday, weather permitting, we'll get Act II of a likely three-act saga between the Windham and Cheverus softball teams. The reigning Class A champion Stags beat the host Eagles, 6-2, behind home runs from Addison DeRoche, Abby Kelly and Hailey Lamontagne, back on May 12.

If early morning starts are your thing, get to Waynflete at 9 a.m., as the reigning Class C champion Flyers girls' lacrosse team hosts three-time Class B champion Greely. Both teams need a victory to help their playoff cause.

Monday, the final week of the regular season commences with a terrific baseball showdown, Marshwood at Scarborough. Thornton Academy's boys' lacrosse team hosts Falmouth, hoping to have closed the gap from the teams' first meeting, a 19-7 Navigators' triumph back on April 17.

Tuesday, South Portland at Thornton Academy is the top baseball game on the docket. Cheverus hosts Kennebunk and Windham goes to Gorham in softball, NYA welcomes York in a compelling interclass boys' lacrosse matchup and there will be plenty at stake when the Windham girls host Gorham.

On Wednesday, Scarborough's baseball team finishes the regular season at rival South Portland. The teams have combined to capture three of the past four Class A state titles. On the softball diamond, two-time reigning Class D champion NYA will get a test at Freeport. The Yarmouth girls' lacrosse team plays its regular season finale at Greely. On May 16, the Clippers fell at home to the Rangers, 7-6, but they haven't lost since.

Thursday features two terrific girls' lacrosse matchups to cap the regular season, as Cheverus goes to Windham and Thornton Academy measures itself against undefeated, top-ranked powerhouse Kennebunk.

And we'll be right back here with another newsletter next Friday, when we can start looking ahead to the postseason.

In the meantime, have a wonderful weekend everyone and one more time, a hearty welcome aboard and thank you to cPort Credit Union!
