PORTLAND—Cardiac Cheverus' most amazing comeback of all ultimately proved futile.

And as a result, a season of drama, resurgence and triumph came to an agonizing conclusion Saturday afternoon at Shea Field, as the third-ranked Stags erased an eight-run deficit to Cinderella No. 10 seed Noble in a Class A South semifinal round showdown, only to go down to defeat regardless.
